In 2005, I visited a place known as "Europe's last dictatorship." It was a short trip, like a field study from my graduate school in France. On the way to the capital by bus from the airport, my Lithuanian friend, who had a large Viking-like build, suddenly started laughing.

"Gahahaha!"

"What's so funny, Joseph?"

"Look at the sign outside, Shingo. In this country, if you win the lottery, you get a new car, but it's a Trabant! I can't believe they're still making those cars; it's shocking."

That Trabant was a small passenger car produced by East Germany. The year 1989 marked the collapse of the communist regime. Are they still producing it, or is it just leftover stock?

The atmosphere of this city was clearly different from that of developed Europe or Japan. It felt controlled, monitored, and restricted, almost like I had slipped back in time.

The enormous, inorganic buildings and the presence of grand architecture and extravagant subways made us acutely aware of our small existence and powerlessness as individuals. It felt like a crushing realization that resisting the state was impossible. This feeling was similar to the Catholic doctrine that states humans are powerless against God. Indeed, communism denied religion.

I actually quite like the unique atmosphere of the former communist bloc.

We arrived at the hotel. According to what I heard, foreigners could only stay in hotels designated for them.

After placing my luggage in my room, I stepped out into the hallway, heading toward the lobby. At the end of the dark, empty hallway, an old woman sat in a chair, watching me. As I was about to take the elevator down, she began talking into a walkie-talkie or something, furtively communicating in the darkness. She was a watcher.

When I reached the lobby, a young and beautiful woman at the dark reception desk greeted me with a very kind smile. There was something indescribably melancholic about her demeanor.

My classmates and I decided to have dinner somewhere in town and entered a random restaurant. The interior was dimly lit, with about four waitresses dressed in traditional costumes. My classmates and I looked at each other wide-eyed, amazed at how such stunning beauties were wearing such short skirts and sexy traditional outfits.

Indeed, when I lived in Hungary, I realized that women considered dressing as provocatively as possible to be a status symbol. I noticed that it was something unimaginable in Europe. After placing our order, a Turkish girl in our group, exhausted and hungry, rested her head on the table and said, "I'm so tired."

Suddenly, a beautiful waitress in a miniskirt and traditional costume shouted at us with a terrifying expression.

She was probably telling us that we must sit up straight and proper in the restaurant.

Oh, this is it! How interesting! I remember thinking how fascinating culture can be.

A few days later, I received sudden news that my grandmother was critically ill and I had to return home urgently. Changing my flight itinerary seemed very difficult, but Joseph somehow managed to negotiate in Russian, which was a great help.

I arrived safely at the airport.

At the airport, a group of young people was hugging each other, crying loudly, singing, and celebrating their friend's departure. I couldn't help but imagine that they might not be able to leave the country easily, making it feel like a farewell forever.

After clearing passport control, I was counting the paper money I hadn't spent in the departure lounge.

A white man next to me said,

"Now that you've crossed the border, it's just paper waste. Forget about it."

En 2005, j'ai visité un endroit connu comme étant la « dernière dictature d'Europe ». C'était un court voyage, comme une visite d'étude de mon école supérieure en France. En route vers la capitale en bus depuis l'aéroport, mon ami lituanien, qui avait une grande carrure de viking, a soudainement commencé à rire.

« Gahahaha ! »

« Pourquoi tu ris, Joseph ? »

« Regarde le panneau dehors, Shingo. Dans ce pays, si tu gagnes à la loterie, tu reçois une nouvelle voiture, mais c'est une Trabant ! Je n'arrive pas à croire qu'ils fabriquent encore ces voitures ; c'est choquant. »

Cette Trabant était une petite voiture produite par l'Allemagne de l'Est. L'année 1989 a marqué l'effondrement du régime communiste. Produisent-ils encore cela ou est-ce juste un stock restant ?

L'atmosphère de cette ville était clairement différente de celle de l'Europe développée ou du Japon. Elle semblait contrôlée, surveillée et restreinte, presque comme si j'avais glissé dans le temps.

Les bâtiments énormes et inorganiques et la présence d'une architecture grandiose et de métros extravagants nous rendaient conscients de notre petite existence et de notre impuissance en tant qu'individus. Cela ressemblait à une réalisation écrasante que résister à l'État était impossible. Ce sentiment était similaire à la doctrine catholique qui dit que les humains sont impuissants face à Dieu. En effet, le communisme niait la religion.

J'aime bien, plutôt, l'atmosphère unique du bloc communiste de l'époque.

Nous sommes arrivés à l'hôtel. Selon ce que j'ai entendu, les étrangers ne pouvaient séjourner que dans des hôtels qui leur étaient réservés.

Après avoir déposé mes bagages dans ma chambre, je suis sorti dans le couloir, me dirigeant vers le hall. Au bout du couloir sombre et vide, une vieille femme était assise sur une chaise, me regardant. Alors que j'étais sur le point de descendre en ascenseur, elle a commencé à parler dans un talkie-walkie ou quelque chose, communiquant furtivement dans l'obscurité. Elle était un agent de surveillance.

Lorsque je suis arrivé dans le hall, une jeune femme belle à la réception sombre m'a accueilli avec un sourire très gentil. Il y avait quelque chose d'indescriptiblement mélancolique dans son attitude.

Mes camarades de classe et moi avons décidé de dîner quelque part en ville et sommes entrés dans un restaurant aléatoire. L'intérieur était faiblement éclairé, avec environ quatre serveuses vêtues de costumes traditionnels. Mes camarades de classe et moi nous sommes regardés, stupéfaits de voir que de si belles femmes portaient des jupes aussi courtes et des tenues traditionnelles sexy.

En effet, lorsque j'habitais en Hongrie, j'avais réalisé que les femmes considéraient s'habiller de manière aussi provocante que possible comme un symbole de statut. J'avais remarqué que c'était quelque chose d'impensable en Europe. Après avoir passé commande, une fille turque de notre groupe, épuisée et affamée, a posé sa tête sur la table en disant : "Je suis tellement fatiguée."

Soudainement, une belle serveuse en minijupe et costume traditionnel nous a crié dessus avec une expression terrifiante.

Elle disait probablement que nous devions nous asseoir bien droit et correctement dans le restaurant.

Oh, c'est ça ! Comme c'est intéressant ! Je me souviens avoir pensé à quel point la culture pouvait être fascinante.

Quelques jours plus tard, j'ai reçu soudainement la nouvelle que ma grand-mère était gravement malade et je devais rentrer chez moi d'urgence. Changer mon itinéraire de vol semblait très difficile, mais Joseph a réussi à négocier en russe, ce qui m'a beaucoup aidé.

Je suis arrivé sain et sauf à l'aéroport.

À l'aéroport, un groupe de jeunes s'embrassaient en pleurant à haute voix, en chantant et en célébrant le départ de leur ami. Je ne pouvais pas m'empêcher d'imaginer qu'ils pourraient ne pas pouvoir quitter le pays facilement, ce qui donnait l'impression d'un adieu pour toujours.

Après avoir passé le contrôle des passeports, je comptais l'argent en papier que je n'avais pas dépensé dans le salon de départ.

Un homme blanc à côté de moi a dit,

« Maintenant que tu as franchi la frontière, ce n'est qu'un déchet de papier. Oublie-le. »

2005年、ヨーロッパにおける「欧州最後の独裁国家」と言われる土地を訪れた。フランスの大学院での社会科見学のようなショートトリップであった。空港からバスで首都に向かう途中、バイキングのように大きな体をしたリトアニア出身の友人が何やら笑い出した。

「ガッハハー」

「どうしたジョセフ？」

「やばいぞ、外に看板見ろよ、シンゴ。この国、宝くじが当たると新車の車がもらえるらしいが、トラバントだぜ。まだそんな車が生産されてるのかよ、驚きだ。」

そのトラバント（Trabant）とは、東ドイツが生産していた小型乗用車である。共産主義体制が崩壊した年が1989年。それでもなお生産しているというのか、それとも在庫処分なんだろうか？

この街の雰囲気は、明らかに先進国の欧州や日本とは違う。統制され、監視され、自由が束縛されている、タイムスリップしたかのような感覚がする。

無機質で巨大な建物、大きな建築や豪勢な地下鉄の存在が、我々人間一人の個人の小さな存在価値や非力さを否応にも自覚させる。国家に対して抵抗は不可能だと打ちのめされるような感覚だ。このような感覚は、カトリックの巨大な教会も使う"神に対して人間は不可抗力"だという教義に似ている。確かに、共産主義では宗教を否定していたからな。

旧共産圏独特の雰囲気は嫌いではない。

ホテルへ到着。聞く話によると、外国人は外人専用ホテルしか宿泊できないとのこと。

荷物を置いて部屋を出て、ロビーへ向かおうとした時、誰もいない真っ暗な廊下の先には老婆が一人椅子に座ってこちらを見ていた。エレベーターで降りようとした時、老婆はコソコソと暗闇の中でトランシーバーか何かで連絡を取り合っていた。彼女は監視役なのだ。

ロビーに着いた時、真っ暗な受付では若い美しい女性がとても親切に微笑んでくれた。どこか物寂しげな雰囲気が何とも言えなかった。

同級生とディナーというか夕御飯をどこかで食べようということで、街の中の適当なレストランへ入った。店内は薄暗い感じで4人ぐらいの民族服をまとったウェイトレスがいた。僕ら同級生らは目を丸くしてお互い見合った。なんでこんなに超美人がかなり短いスカートの色っぽい民族衣装なんだって。

確かに、昔ハンガリーに住んでいた頃、気がついたのは、女性はなるたけ色っぽい格好をするのがステイタスだということ。欧州ではあり得ない格好だと気づいていた。注文が終わりしばらくたった時、一緒にいたトルコ人の女の子の同級生が、極度の疲れと空腹でテーブルに頭を乗せ、「疲れたー」ってぐったりしてたら、

突然、ミニスカートの民族衣装の美人ウェイトレスがすさまじい形相で怒鳴り散らした。

おそらく、レストランでは姿勢を正して"きちん"と座らないといけないエチケットと言ってるのであろう。

そうそうこれこれ、面白い！いいなあ文化って、と思ったのを覚えている。

数日後、突然、祖母の危篤の知らせを受け急遽帰国しなくてはならなかった。飛行機の旅日程を変えることはなかなか難しいらしかったが、ジョゼフがロシア語で何とか無理やり交渉してくれたので助かった。

何とか無事空港へ到着。

空港では、なにやら数人の若いグループが号泣しながら肩を組み合い、大きな声で歌を歌い合い、仲間の門出を祝っていた。こちらの勝手な想像かもしれないが、彼らは容易に国外に出ることはできないのか、今生の別れのような姿が何とも言えなかった。

パスポートコントロールも無事終え、出発ロビーで使い切れなかった紙幣を数えていると、

隣にいた白人男性が僕に言った。

「国境を越えたいま、それはただの紙くずだ。忘れてしまえ。」
