the cuckoo’s nest
The Avian Kingdom- Harlösa
SWEDEN
Year : May 2017
Length : 27min
Format : 4K ProRes 422 HQ
Synopsis
In 1644 a resistance nest was built by defenseless farmers against the Swedish army approaching from the North. 700 civilists were executed and their dead bodies were thrown into a valley in Harlösa. Since they were never burried, their traces can be found until today.
Denmark lost the historical province Scania to Sweden in 1648 with the end of the Thirty Years' War, one of the bloodiest conflicts in European history.
In the following decades the Danish so-called “Snapphanars“ kept resistance as guerilla fighters against the Sweds. If one was caught, exucution was done by breaking wheel or impalement.
The two colors of the flag of Scania remind of the connection to Denmark and its belonging to Sweden. It has been kept in remembrance by the locals.

ERROR
Berlin GERMANY
Year : 2012
Length : 11 min
Format : HD
Synopsis
‘’Error’’ by Shingo Yoshida focuses on a glitch in a streetlamp at Alexanderpatz, the rhythmic flickering appears almost to be staged; This malfunction, those moments when the lights turn off, mark its presence. It paradoxically shows itself only as it suddenly disappears.
Yoshida relates this curious public incident, that occurs night after night just outside his studio, to a silent personal reflection of one’s own alienated presence amidst an urban setting, where an overwhelming network of functionality attempts to guide us so that we do not have to grope in the dark.
However, this ultimately shrouds a latent frailty and absurdity that flashes like a pleading morse code, yet goes unnoticed and almost forgotten. By screening his reaction to this phenomenon on his studio window Yoshida opens up a dialogue between the two objects, the lamp and its representation, drawing our attention to these frailties.

- Synopsis -
・English
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, conceived by Bent Skovman and opened on February 26, 2008 near Longyearbyen on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, is one of the world’s largest facilities designed to preserve the planet’s botanical diversity for the future. Excavated deep into the permafrost, the vault is engineered to store millions of seed varieties. Its interior is maintained at –18°C, and the structural design allows it to retain low temperatures even in the event of a cooling-system failure. To address potential sea-level rise due to global warming, the facility is situated approximately 130 meters above sea level and about 120 meters inside the mountain rock.
In recent years, however, the rapid progression of climate change has raised concerns about the vault’s long-term resilience. In 2016, meltwater entered the entrance tunnel, prompting the Norwegian government to undertake waterproofing and reinforcement work. Despite these measures, questions remain regarding the facility’s long-term stability. While tourism provides economic benefits to the region, discussions have also emerged on whether access to the Svalbard archipelago should be restricted again for environmental protection.
Scattered across the icy landscape are traces of intersecting histories: the wreckage of Nazi aircraft shot down by researchers or the Norwegian military, drifting sea ice, and remnants of former coal-mining operations.

SOS Morse code – Fernsehturm
Berlin GERMANY
Year : 30 April 2010
Length : 4 minutes 42 seconds
Sound : No
Format : HD
Performance : Shingo Yoshida
Special thanks : Philip Vormwald
Synopsis
Shingo Yoshida’s video SOS Morse code – Fernsehturmengages the subject of communication codes with an absurd stunt at Berlin’s iconic TV Tower, a “futuristic” reminder of East German optimism and an inescapable symbol of the unified city. Just before closing and from inside the dark, empty lounge located in the giant sphere suspended high above the city, Yoshida employed an existing table lamp to flash out a forlorn SOS. The video documentation of this performance attains a melancholic, even existential grandeur at once personal and universal by presenting both a dramatic intent and a negligible effect.
